Georges Braque (1882-1963)

Thalia, Brooch

18k Gold, diamond Signed and numbered III/IV EA (for Artist Proof, "Epreuve d'Artiste" in french)

Provenance : Heger de Loewenfeld private collection.

It was called Thalia, after the greek goddess, one of The Three Graces in Greek Mythology. The gouache of Georges Braque for the "Bijoux de Braque" was The Three Graces (photo 5). When Grace Kelly ordered the Three Graces jewel when she was princess of Monaco, Heger de Loewenfeld figured Grace Kelly could be one of the third Graces, so the jewel would need only 2 birds, and would be called Thalia, after the goddess of Abundance, festivity and rich banquets. We can see a picture of Grace Kelly with the Jewel and Heger de Loewenfeld on photo 4.

"Bijoux de Braque" is a project of the famous french painter Braque, who designed jewelry in the last three years of his life, from 1960 to 1963. All items of this collection are made after Braque major career works he has chosen to be transposed in jewels and precious sculptures with the help of a Stonecutter, Heger de Loewenfeld. The project ended up as an exhibition at the "palais du Louvre" from march to may 1963 (Photo 7)

There are approximatively 100 gouaches, listed in the book "Les Metamorphoses de Braque" by Heger de Loewenfeld and Raphael de Cuttoli. All subjects are renamed after Greek Mythology characters.
